Submit a notice of disposal for a vehicle

Notify us when you have sold, gifted or disposed of a vehicle.

Introduction

You must submit a 'Notice of Disposal' (NOD) when you sell or dispose of a NSW-registered vehicle, such as a car, motorcycle or trailer.

A NOD informs Transport for NSW that you are no longer the registered operator of the vehicle.

You should submit a NOD immediately after you've sold the vehicle so:

• you cannot be held responsible for any parking or driving fines or offences the buyer might incur
• the buyer can transfer the vehicle's registration (rego) online within the required 14 days and avoid paying a late fee.

Eligibility

You can submit a NOD online unless any of the following apply:

• you do not have a NSW Driver Licence or Photo Card
• you have a conditional vehicle registration
• you're disposing of the vehicle on behalf of a company or an organisation
• the buyer resides interstate and holds an interstate driver licence
• the buyer is an interstate motor dealer who does not have a NSW motor dealer licence number.

If you cannot submit online, you'll need to submit a paper form at a Service NSW Centre or by mail.

What you need

• the vehicle's NSW registration details
• your NSW Driver Licence or Photo Card details
• the buyer's NSW Driver Licence
• the NSW motor dealer’s licence number and registered business name (if you sold a vehicle to a dealership)
• the sale date (known as the date of disposal)
• the sale price or market value of the vehicle (whichever is higher)
• a MyServiceNSW Account (optional).

How to submit

1. Check the eligibility requirements.
2. Select the 'Submit online' button.
3. Follow the prompts to submit your NOD online.
4. Print your receipt or send it to an email address.

If you're not able to submit a NOD online:

1. Download and complete the Notice of Disposal form – PDF.
2. Visit a service centre and submit your NOD in person, or post it to:
   Service NSW
   PO Box 21
   Parkes NSW 2870.

More information

• A paper copy of the NOD is on the back of a vehicle's rego certificate. It is labelled 'Part A Notice of Disposal'.
• Make sure you keep a paper or digital copy of the NOD for your records.
• The buyer can only transfer the registration online after you've submitted your NOD.
• If you have an e-toll or pass account, contact your toll provider to remove the registration details from your account or you'll be liable for the buyer's tolls.
• If you have comprehensive insurance, contact your insurance provider to update your policy.
• If you have personalised or special number plates (SNP), ensure the buyer is aware of any ongoing fees. If you want to keep your special plates, you can reserve and replace them with a set of general number plates. You can also exchange them with another vehicle registered in your name. Plates must be returned to a service centre once removed from the vehicle.
• If you sold your vehicle to a wrecker:
  • Without number plates, you do not need to submit a Notice of Disposal. You'll need to cancel the registration and return the plates to a service centre.
  • With number plates, you should submit a Notice of Disposal (the sale price is the amount you received for the vehicle’s parts).
